‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ on DVD and Combo Pack

By Francine Brokaw

In 2002 audiences went wild for the hit film “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” In 2016 the entire cast reunited for the sequel – “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” While it is not as hilarious as the original, it does have some cute scenes.

Normally, we would think of a second wedding as being for Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian’s (John Corbett) daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris). That makes sense. But this is not a traditional sequel following in the footsteps of the daughter getting married. This is the story of Toula’s parents Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria (Lainie Kazan) who discover their marriage was not legal. So, they are not married.

Maria decides to wait for a proper proposal from Gus, who automatically thinks they will simply go down and get married again. That’s not what Maria has in mind. On the contrary. She wants a proper proposal and a nice Greek wedding.

At the same time that this ruckus is going on, Paris is facing a big decision. Should she go to college out of state or stay near her big, extended Greek family whom she feels smothers her with their good intentions?

Vardalos wrote this screenplay, as she did the first one. Viewers will probably agree it is a fun little film however not filled with as many laugh-out-loud moments as the original movie.

Bonus features on the disc include a gag reel and a “making of” featurette. The cast discusses reuniting for this sequel and the fun they had on the original and this film. What is amazing is that the whole cast from 2002 agreed to return for this second film. Even Vardalos’ real life husband, Ian Gomez, returns as Ian Miller’s good friend. And Andrea Martin is just as pushy as ever as Aunt Voula. Seeing these characters we have enjoyed for the past 14 years is entertaining, however the plot is just not as funny as the first film. Will there be a third film in this franchise? That is up to Nia Vardalos. Whether she has another Greek family story to tell is something we have to wait to find out. There might be something fun to do with Joey Fatone’s character of Angelo. But at the moment there are no plans for another film.

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” is available on DVD and in a combo pack.
